Where Did they go...

The mass exodus was fundamentally an export of specialized hard-rock mining expertise. Key destinations for these workers include:

Mexico: Beginning in 1825, miners from Redruth and Camborne migrated to silver mines in Hidalgo. The cities of Pachuca and Real del Monte retain a strong Cornish heritage, deeply influencing Mexican cuisine (such as the Cornish pasty, local football, and distinctive architecture).

The Americas: Thousands settled in US mining towns following the California Gold Rush. In Grass Valley, California, over 60% of the population was of Cornish descent by 1894. They were also highly active in South American copper and gold mines in Brazil and Chile.

Australia & New Zealand: Immigrants established thriving communities in South Australia’s copper belt. The town of Moonta is widely known as Australia's "Little Cornwall".

The Rest of the UK: Not all migrants went overseas. Tens of thousands of young Cornish men relocated to the coal and iron fields of South Wales, Durham, and Cumbria as stepping stones or alternative economic escapes. The scale of this movement radically altered Cornwall’s demographics. In the latter half of the 19th century, over 40% of young adult males left the county, and it is estimated that today there are more than 6 million people of Cornish descent worldwide.
